ToughCord - The ultra-strong, low-drag leash

The aim was to develop a leash cord that has a minimal diameter, reduces drag in the water and withstands high loads without overstretching or tearing, yet is lightweight and barely noticeable when surfing. The result is a leash cord that consists of two harmonized components: a thin and flexible 5 mm BASF® urethane core for shock absorption and an ultra-strong Dyneema® cover that absorbs the load of wave impacts and offers the leash optimum protection against overstretching, cuts and breakage.

With increasing wave height, the cord diameter of conventional leash cords is increased to withstand the forces that occur. This increases both the weight and the water drag. In addition, the standard leash cord is sensitive to cuts and UV damage as well as overstretching, especially in tuff surfing conditions. This is why Ventores has replaced the traditional cord with the innovative ToughCord, which is based on a new structure. First, a thin, flexible 5 mm BASF® urethane core provides shock absorption. To significantly increase the cord's resistance, the urethane core is covered with ultra-strong Dyneema® fibers. Thanks to a specially developed weaving method, the cover allows a defined elongation and absorbs the entire load before the urethane core reaches its elongation limit. The Dyneema® cover also ensures a smooth and durable surface and effectively protects the cord from hight tension forces, cuts, abrasion and UV radiation. This special combination allows a thinner and lighter leash cord even in larger waves, which reduces water drag and improves performance. The Dyneema® cover ends in a SoftSwivel at the ankle strap and in a high-strength loop connection at the Rail-Guard. This eliminates the need for vulnerable glued connectors, plug-in connections and screw fastenings for metal swivels. All of that ensures a reliable construction, from the Ankle-Strap to the Rail-Guard.

SoftSwivel - The metal-free / purist swivel connection

The newly developed patented pending Ventores SoftSwivel technology replaces the two standard metal swivels with high-strength knots made of Dyneema® fibers that rotate on low-friction surfaces made of special polyamide. The swivel knot in the ankle strap is made from the end piece of the Dyneema cover of the leash cord, while the swivel on the rail guard is made from a special Dyneema line that also creates a connection to the rail guard. In addition to the two metal swivels that are vulnerable to corrosion, the SoftSwivels technology also eliminates the need for gluing, plug connections and screw connections.

To ensure the free rotation of a leash cord, manufacturers worldwide use metal swivels at both ends of the leash. But a metal swivel bearing is very vulnerable to wear and corrosion when in constant contact with salt and sand. This can lead to blockages during rotation, material weakening and finally to material failure. This weak point has been eliminated in the Ventores FutureLeash. The new SoftSwivel technology replaces the conventional metal swivels with a combination of two high-performance materials: knots made of Dyneema® fibers, which rotate on special plastic molds with low-friction surfaces made of special polyamide. The result of this combination is a high-strength and easy-rotating connection that resists tuff conditions and even works reliably in contact with sand and permanent exposure to salt water. By removing the metal swivels, the usual gluing and screwing of the swivels in the connectors is also no longer necessary, which eliminates other possible causes of material failure under high loads.

Simply reliable

Focused on the essentials to increase reliability- Newly developed Rail-guard and Ankle strap spacer

OnePiece Spacer - The simple spacer

During an impact of a wave, the “spacer” on the ankle strap of standard leashes must absorb all tension and bending loads. The bonding and screwing of metal swivels and cord as well as the integrated joint of a traditional spacer are constantly exposed to high loads, which can lead to material failure. With Ventores, the brand new OnePiece Spacer is designed in such a way that it does not have to absorb any tension load, but only keeps the leash cord away from the foot, while bending homogeneously. The cord is simply fed through the spacer to the SoftSwivel rotation mould in the ankle strap so that all tension loads are transferred directly.

In order to keep the leash cord as far away from the foot as possible, spacers are used on the ankle strap of conventional leashes, in which the metal swivel and the connector with glued leash cord are both integrated. When impacted by a wave, the spacer must absorb the entire tension load and bending. The gluing and screwing in the connector and metal swivel as well as the molded joint, which also allows the spacer to bend, are therefore constantly exposed to high loads (tension and bending), which can lead to rapid aging and early material failure. With the Ventores FutureLeash the newly developed spacer is designed in such a way that it does not have to absorb any tension and only keeps the leash cord away from the foot and bends smoothly thanks to the flexible material. The leash cord is only fed through the spacer into the ankle strap, to the low-friction rotation mould of the SoftSwivel. The rotation mould has been placed in the ankle strap to transfer the occurring tension loads directly here.

SafeLock System - The reliable board connection

With conventional rail guards, frequent opening and continuous tension loads lead to increasing wear of the Velcros, which can cause the middle Velcro layer - holding the string cord - to pull out, resulting in board loss. The Ventores FutureLeash uses a newly developed Velcro strap loop system (SafeLock system), which additionally halves the tension loads caused by the string cord through a kind of pulley system and distributes them much more efficiently to the three Velcro layers. This minimizes wear on the Velcro and significantly reduces the risk of losing the surfboard.

Conventional rail guards consist of a layered Velcro fastener that connects the leash to the surfboard with a string cord. The layer that holds the string cord lies between two other layers. Frequent opening, contact with sand and sustained tension loads lead to wear of the Velcros over time, causing the middle Velcro strap and string cord to simply pull out from between the other two layers and the board to get free. The SafeLock system was developed to prevent this and create a reliable connection between your shortboard and the leash. A Velcro system, which is similar to the principle of a pulley, distributes the tension loads more optimally and reduces the risk of accidental pull-outs. The Ventores SafeLock system also consists of three layers of Velcro on top of each other, but these are formed from a single piece that is looped several times. The cord is first passed through the string cord, then deflected 180 degrees on the opposite side and closed by an additional Velcro layer. The new loop system even halves the load and the resulting friction absorbs additional energy. This means that a higher load can be absorbed with the same number of layers and wear on the Velcro is minimized. The loop is an integral part of the SoftSwivel, which improves the load transmission even further. Ventores also uses a string cord made of strong Dyneema® fibers for your board plug connection.

"I've been surfing the FutureLeash almost every day for several months now and I'm super happy. The leash can really withstand any impact. What's really cool about the SoftSwivel is that the leash doesn't twist. Even with expensive leashes, you always have the problem that they twist and form loops. This leash doesn't do that at all."

Just the best stuff

The choice of materials plays a key role in the reliability of a surf leash. Highly functional materials such as BASF® urethane, Dyneema® fibers and special polyamides are used for the core components of the Ventores FutureLeash. These materials have been the preferred choice of leading manufacturers worldwide for years, e.g. in yachting, mountain sports and automotive engineering.

Get more details about the materials of the core components:

BASF®-Urethan (TPU core of the leash cord and OnePiece spacer)

Ventores uses BASF® urethane for the OnePiece spacer and the flexible “inner core” of the Ventores FutureLeash. The highly developed, extremely resistant TPU material has proven to be extremely durable in many industrial applications and has also been known for its outstanding characteristics in the world of surf technology for years. Due to its extraordinary flexibility, TPU not only withstands high temperature changes, but also has a particular ability to efficiently absorb forces such as sudden tensile/shock loads and also has excellent bending characteristics. The outstanding shock-absorbing properties minimize the risk of injuries to the ankles and damage to surfing equipment, even in the most demanding surfing conditions.

Dyneema® ( leash cord cover and SoftSwivel material)

In order to achieve maximum resistance with low weight and optimum protection of the flexible core material, the urethane core is additionally covered with ultra-strong Dyneema® polyethylene fibers. The two SoftSwivel knots and the highly stressed string cord are also made of these fibers. Dyneema® fibers are currently used in a wide range of industrial applications as well as in high-performance sailing and mountain sports. The fiber offers numerous advantages thanks to its exceptional properties:

- High breaking load at low weight: Dyneema® is up to 15 times stronger than steel at only a fraction of its weight. This enables a thin but resistant leash that can withstand intensive and shock loads as well as strong tension.

- Low friction coefficient: The special surface texture of the Dyneema® fiber ensures perfect rotation of the SoftSwivel and gives the leash cord a pleasant grip with a smooth surface.

- Zero corrosion: Dyneema® is more resistant to the harmful effects of salt water, UV radiation and sand. Compared to traditional metal swivels, Dyneema® cannot corrode and thus ensures a longer lifetime of the swivel knots.

- Elongation: Dyneema is actually known for its very low elongation. Thanks to a specially developed weaving of the cover around the core, the cover allows precisely controllable elongation and therefore limited stretch. The cover then shows its strength at a defined point.

- Resistance: Dyneema® is highly resistant to abrasion and thus protects the leash cord against weakening through contact with rough obstacles such as rocks, reefs and fins.

Polyamide components (rotating surfaces for SoftSwivel)

In addition to BASF® urethane and Dyneema® fibers, polyamide plays an important role as a material for the two newly developed and patent-pending components, the two “moulds” for the Ventores SoftSwivel. We are aware of some concerns about the use of plastic components, but our components are made of a special fiber-reinforced polyamide. This high-performance material has already proven itself in the most demanding industrial applications, e.g. in the automotive industry for components that must withstand constant high loads, extreme temperature differences and changing environmental influences. Components made of special polyamide have therefore proven to be ideal for use in surfing:

- Temperature-, weather- and UV-resistant: The components keep their shape and function even under extreme temperature differences and other changing environmental influences such as rain, sun, wind, or salt air and salt water - whether in hot summer or in cold water.

- Resistant to hydrolysis: Even with long-term contact with water and moisture, the material remains stable and functional.

- Resistant to solvents and fuel: Regardless of whether the components come into contact with fuels, oils or other solvents - they remain unaffected and reliable over the long term.

- Impact-resistant: The components are particularly resistant to mechanical stress, which also significantly improves their lifespan and reliability.

Good reasons to shop now

Choosing the right leash is crucial for your surfing experience. With the Ventores FutureLeash, you're buying more than just another accessory for your next surf session. It is a next-generation high-performance technology product that is based on solutions and materials that offer you more performance, durability and safety all in one.

Choose your right leash

Ventores currently offers 2 different lengths of Futureleash for your short board. One 6ft and one 7ft

get more help

In bigger waves (over head) you can choose the 7ft leash for more comfort in hard impacts. This has no significant effect on performance due to the lower water drag of the thinner cord.

Apart from that:
- The leash should be about as long as your board.
- Leashes that are too short can hold the board dangerously close to you.
- Leashes that are too long increase the risk of entanglement.
